I just found an interesting article about the World Food Programme (WFP) and how the US is by far the biggest contributer. It clearly compares the American government's giving habits to that of OPEC. OPEC, which had $674b in oil money last year, gave $1.45m. That is a lot of money, but it is equal to only about 1 minute and 10 seconds of the organization's yearly profits. Hey, Indonesia gave twice that much. The one possible concession is that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates also gave separately ($6.5m and $2.1m, respectively). But even so, they gained $164b and $63b in oil revenue. The US gave $1.1b to this program, which is approximately 0.4% of the annual budget or 3.5 hours worth of the national budget of $2.77t. That's about 750 times what OPEC gave.

Of course, this is all government spending. It doesn't take into account private organizations. And it is one organization and may not necessarily reflect the groups' overall giving. But what it does make me wonder is how much money are we as Christians giving to help the hungry around the world. I certainly hope that we give more than 0.4% of our annual budget, but with some people I'm not sure. Jesus would certainly give more.

The time on my cell phone was off by 14 minutes the other day. I checked it against Anna's cell phone and all the office clocks. Any clues? Maybe the FBI is bugging me.
